  • Recognizing the Significance of Adult SEL Skill Development in Education

Teaching children to read and fostering career skills make education one of the most crucial professions in the world. The quality of education received by future generations heavily relies on educators. The pandemic and subsequent isolation have highlighted the vital role teachers play in families' lives. However, teaching also experiences one of the highest rates of burnout, resulting in the loss of both new and experienced professionals from the field.

To ensure that educators not only survive but thrive in their roles, it is crucial to cultivate their Adult Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) skills. Educators who have mastered SEL skills experience greater job satisfaction, develop positive relationships with their students, and can effectively model these skills for their students. With this goal in mind, we are introducing a series of courses focused on Adult SEL Skills and Well-Being.

Understanding the Importance of Adult SEL Skill Development

In 2022, the New York State Education Department embraced optional revised benchmarks for Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), which now encompass the inclusion of Adult SEL skills. This recognition highlights that SEL skills are not exclusive to students but also hold immense value for adults. Therefore, it has become imperative to offer workshops tailored to enhancing adults' social and emotional skill set. By actively engaging in these workshops, adults can unlock the benefits of SEL skill development.

The Impact of Positive School Climate on Educator Retention—Fostering a Sense of Belonging

School climate refers to the influence of school culture on an individual's feelings of safety, acceptance, and overall well-being. It significantly impacts their ability to succeed academically and in life. A positive school climate enables students and staff to feel secure and connected to teachers, peers, families, support staff, and administrators.

Learning skills such as getting along with others, making friends, and establishing connections are essential at the adult level as well. These skills need to be actively taught and developed to foster positive school climates and promote educator retention.
